Inject some personality into your home office

Whether you work remotely or split your days between the traditional office and working from home, it’s important to create a workspace that is both functional and inspiring – surrounding yourself with colours and pieces that bring you joy will lead to a more pleasant and productive working environment.

Tips for injecting personality:

Take stock of your room

Firstly, how can you position your set-up? Where are the doors, windows, built-in units, and any other obstacles that might get in the way? Ideally set up your desk and screen away from direct light to avoid glare on your screen that might cause eye strain.

Colour is key

It’s good to understand what direction your room is facing, as different colours work best in different light sources. For example, north-facing rooms can feel cold with cooler greys and bright whites and often benefit from warmer or jewel colour tones. Whereas south-facing rooms can work with cooler greys, blues, and greens.

Setu, Cosm and Mirra 2 chairs offer a wealth of options to continue your colour scheme or to add individual pops of colour. You can create a seamless, modern look with the dipped-in colours of Setu, available in Canyon Red, Nightfall Blue, and Glacier Blue as well as the classic Graphite and Mineral.

With wool, felt and linen fabric options available in a rainbow of colours, try introducing a mixture of textures to add depth and warmth to your office space.

Focus on your needs

How do you tend to work? Are you on calls for most of the day? If so, you might want to invest in an accent chair or sit-stand desk to give you some variety and stop you from being in the same position for hours on end. Or, are you writing or typing a lot? If this is you, investing in the right desk to give you ample workspace is going to be vital.

Invest in ergonomics

Regardless of your calendar, there’s no doubt that we’re all putting in long hours at work. It might be tempting to choose style over practicality, but investing in comfortable furniture that will last and support you for eight hours or more will pay dividends in the long term. Herman Miller’s ergonomic chairs combine both comfort and style, designed and engineered to support users from start to end. Our iconic Aeron Chair, for example, has been designed with eight unique zones of support across the thighs, pelvis, sacrum, and upper back.

Add finishing touches

Introducing greenery to your space not only makes it feel like you’re bringing the outside in, but certain houseplants can also help to purify the air. Or if you’re not green-fingered but still want some natural greenery, snake plants, aloe vera, and cacti are notoriously hard to kill – or avoid the risk altogether and get some faux plants!

Add your favourite artwork or decorative pieces – whether that be souvenirs from your travels, drawings by the kids, or cherished photographs – it’s important to include pieces that make you smile.
